It was a big ask at the eleventh hour but faced with having to cancel their wedding, TV sports host Peter Lazer and his fiancee managed to pull everything a day forward to beat Dan Andrews’ snap five day lockdown.
Lazer, a popular event personality and MC who calls the Australian Open, made a mad scramble to move guests, photographers, caterers and the celebrant 24 hours ahead.
On Friday night, he and Sarah Levchenko were married a day earlier than planned in a Melbourne park hours ahead of the 11.59pm coronavirus closure.
It was achieved, Mr Lazer said, by sending dozens of text messages immediately after Premier Andrews’ lockdown announcement.
The lockdown bans weddings except on compassionate grounds and Lazer, a former male model, Neighbours and The Secret Life of Us star, managed to beat the clock.
Of the 78 people invited to attend the original wedding ceremony, 75 made it to the pop up event.
“I’m probably a little bit more stressed than I have been in my life, but I am okay,” Mr Lazer told ABC Radio Melbourne.
The couple, who are expecting a child in July, had planned to marry on Saturday February 13, because it is Mr Lazer’s grandmother’s birthday.
He is well-known in Melbourne for hosting events from the Victorian Miss Universe finals to gala award dinners and sports events.
