Brisbane Lions defence Marcus Adams playing for his future

Feelings of envy and guilt will drive Lions defender Marcus Adams as he plays for his Brisbane career this year.

Adams is desperate to make his AFL return after playing just 11 matches in the past two seasons – including only one in the Lions’ run to the preliminary final last year – due to ongoing foot injuries.

Entering the final season of his Lions contract, the 27-year-old Perth product wants to prove he’s worthy of the club’s decision to pick him up from the Western Bulldogs at the end of the 2018 season.

“I feel a sense of guilt in the fact that I haven’t actually been able to go out and contribute on the field,” said Adams. who wants to repay the faith shown in him by Lions coach Chris Fagan, Brisbane’s list manager Dom Ambrogio, and the club’s former football manager David Noble.

“This year I’m hoping can be the year that I really justify them having brought me up here in the first place.”

Adams’ only game last season was Brisbane’s round-one loss to Hawthorn.

He re-injured his foot during the defeat and was not seen again as the Lions returned from the COVID-19-enforced break to charge their way to second place on the ladder and to within one win of a grand-final appearance.

“It’s pretty hard to see the guys going so well and not being part of it,” Adams said.

“Everyone just wants to be out there so there’s that, I wouldn’t say bitterness, but theres that jealousy that comes with seeing what theyre getting to be a part of.

“I guess the club as a whole is part of it but it’s really the 22 that are playing each week, so there’s a little bit of jealousy surrounding that, and I definitely felt that on occasions last year.

“I hopefully get a decent run at it this year … I’ve been running laps for the past two years, so I’m pretty fed up with it.”

Despite playing for a new Lions’ deal, Adams won’t put pressure on himself when he does gets another chance be part of Brisbane’s 22.

“I don’t really have too much expectation on myself because it’s been so long now. I’m just enjoying the process and enjoying each session at the moment,” he said.
