She’s one of TikTok’s highest-earning stars, reportedly taking home $6.5 million after shooting to fame performing dance routines.
But Addison Rae has been accused of “stealing from Black entertainers” after performing a series of “TikTok dances” during a stint on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon March 26.
During the segment, the 20-year-old performed eight mini routines — all of which are dances that have gone viral on the social media platform, including Jason Derulo’s Savage Love and Megan Thee Stallion’s Savage.
Following the TikTok star’s appearance, many were quick to point out the social media star wasn’t the brains behind the popular choreography, calling out the show for not crediting the creators, many of whom are black.
A video of the segment shared by Fallon was quickly bombarded with criticism on Twitter as many asked why the host didn’t invite the “original Black creators” to show them.
“Stealing from black entertainers and having white “creators” regurgitate it to the masses is American history 101,” one said.
“Why didn’t you invite the original Black creators to show you and highlight them?” another wrote.
“These moves/dances were made by black ppl yet she’s the one getting the recognition and money,” someone else added.
Others called on Fallon and Addison to “do better” labelling the segment “disrespectful”.
Not everyone agreed the performance was in “poor taste” with some stating the show had a full list of creators on the YouTube video.
Others stressed it would be difficult to get all the original creators into the studio to perform the eight routines.
Neither Addison nor Fallon have responded to the backlash, but Addison did share a cryptic tweet on Monday, writing: “today is a new day!! choose kindness!! life is short!! tomorrow isn’t promised!!”
The creators of the dances performed are @noahschnapp, who made up the moves to Do It Again in April last year, while Corvette Corvette is credited to private account @yvnggprince. The Laffy Taffy remix that went viral with a fist-pump routine originated from@flyboyfu, and @keke.janjah created the moves to Savage.
Addison has 78.9 million followers and over 5 billion likes on the social media platform, earning $6.5 million in 2020 according to Variety.
She was on Fallon’s show to promote her new single Obsessed.
