Did you know?
The Australian Leukodystrophy Support Group Inc (ALDS) is a voluntary, non-profit organisation that helps raise funds to provide counselling, support and information to families and individuals affected by leukodystrophy.
Our organisation exists through limited support from government and generous donations from organisations and individuals, enabling us to fulfil our mission and aims.
The limited support from government is simply because leukodystrophy, by its nature, only affects a very small percentage of the population and the government has other health funding priorities.
We rely on paid memberships and donations to fund our work to support people affected by leukodystrophy.
The ALDS is recognised by the Australian Government as a charity for tax deduction purposes.
All donations above $2 are tax deductible.

Continence aids are very costly to families
For people in Victoria, the Victorian Aids and Equipment Program (VAEP) Guidelines provide a very comprehensive list of equipment, aids and services that may be subsidised.
For people in South Australia, Novita Children’s Services is an organisation who can provide therapy, equipment and home support services – www.novita.org.au.
Similar programs exist in all states. However, surveys conducted by various organisations have found that these subsidies generally contribute only partially to the costs involved. Individuals and families are therefore required to seek top-up funding. There are long delays first in obtaining approval, and then in actually receiving the goods or services. Once aids and equipment are obtained, there are further delays in modifying them so they are ready for use. Changing circumstances are not always taken into consideration. This is especially so with a growing child, or someone with a condition that is deteriorating.
You can access a survey on the VAEP conducted by Scope, a non-profit organisation which provides disability services throughout Victoria.
Families may seek assistance from the ALDS when there are inadequacies in government support and funding.

Thank you
We thank most sincerely all individuals, groups and organisations who give so generously to our group. Without them, the ALDS would not be able to maintain the high level of support that all leukodystrophy families deserve. View our Thank you page of recognition.
